Lord Belus of Rosby

Information:
NAME: Lord Belus ‘Ba’al’ Rosby
ETHNICITY: Kingslander
HOMETOWN: Rosby
CURRENT RESIDENCE: Rosby
OCCUPATION: Lord of Rosby

Ba'al is portrayed by Cliff Simon and is adapted from the television show, Stargate: SG-1.

Talents:
  • Average talent for swordplay, mostly in Westerosi style - though he dabbled in Braavosi waterdancing. Give him armor and a quality sword and he’ll easily handle the rabble, but he’s not going to be winning any tournaments.
  • Proficient in both ancient Valyrian and the more common version spoke in the Free Cities. He has picked up some Ghiscari, but not enough to hold a real conversation with.
  • He’s an adept when it comes to trade and economics, having spent much of his time in the Free Cities learning from the merchant republics in what it means to invest and build a thriving source of income.
  • He has a taste for intrigue and he knows how to behave far more discreetly than his older brother did.

  • Resources:
  • 06/26/16 Business Savvy
Your character's name is known in mercantile circles, ensuring that connections are easier to make and merchants and craftsmen are more likely to cooperate.
  • 06/26/16 Dressed to the 9's
Your character is always one of the best-groomed individuals in the room, and being so stately improves all of their at-a-glance impressions. Useful for gaining positive renown or favor.

  • History:
His father was the previous Lord of Rosby and his mother was of the Reachman family, House Ball. Thanks to this alliance, his father and his brothers fought heavily in the War of Thorns. This would take a tremendous toll on both families, ultimately resulting in the dissolution of the Ball family who would lose all their holdings, as well as the Rosby family of whom Belas was the only survivor. During the early parts of the war, he was squired to a notable Reachman knight and lord, but ultimately proved to have more cunning when it came to strategy than in actual strength of arms. Though he acquitted himself well enough in a battle, he was not the sort of knight who earned great prestige and fame from jousting in the lists or on the battlefield. During this time his two elder brothers died upon the battlefield, while his father took a mortal wound that necessitated his return to the Crownlands. His surviving brother, Perwyn, became the Lord of Rosby and returned to the safety of the Crownlands, while Belus remained in the Reach during the waning days of the War of Thorns.

In the aftermath, all the houses involved were found guilty by King Aenys and a child was demanded from each house. His elder brother surrendered his only daughter and she was later reported to have died of fever, though it was heavily suspected that she had been fed to a dragon instead. His brother swore an oath to one day avenge himself against the king's tyranny, which was no easy task while lording over lands so close to the Red Keep. Ser Belus wanted no part in this fool's errand and obliged himself of some Rosby gold to indulge himself in the world. A tour of the Free Cities did him much good and during that time, he would adopt many of their fashions and customs for himself. His wicked mouth and schemes would earn him the Ghiscari name of Ba'al, which in Westerosi roughly translated to something between devil and trickster.

In his time in Braavos, he pursued the romances of varied and beautiful courtesans while declining to actually involve any spending of his own gold. It was a tricky business that was eventually brought to a close when word returned to him that his brother had fallen ill and passed in the night. Rumors abound that it had been Belus who employed a Faceless Man for the deed, just as there were whispers that Perwyn had tried to act against the king and been handily dealt with by the Master of Whispers. Whatever the case, their mother would passed away before Belus's ship returned him home. The castellan confirmed him as the new Lord of Rosby. He soon found his place in the court of King's Landing where his experiences in the Free Cities offered him a keen insight lacking among his fellow nobility. His return was only five years ago, but with the coronation of a new king, he envisions himself as taking a new place on the council.
